International Travel with iPhone Xr on Verizon Network

I will be traveling to Panama in the coming months and will have my US tethered iPhone with me. It is currently on a Verizon plan and according to them, I can pay $10.00 per day to use the phone while I'm there. I really don't plan on sending any receiving calls per se, however, I will need to use cellular service for gps apps as I navigate through the country. Any advice on how I can do this without paying Verizon $10.00?
