Hi Abnissen, I just had the same issue; old HP LaserJet 1160 connected via USB to new MacBook Air.
I disconnected the printer, deleted it in System Preferences, Printers and Scanners, then moved the folder "hp" in /Library/Printers to the Trash. Then reconnected, added and installed again via System Preferences, Printers and Scanners = works.
I think this way is relatively safe if you're connecting via USB - if you're using some kind of wireless connection to the printer... I'd try first without moving the /Library/Printers/hp folder to the Trash.

What model printer are you using? The exact model designation please.
If you have an AirPrint-enabled printer then no manufacturer-provided software or drivers are necessary.
Apple recommends that you do not install any software that came with the printer or from the manufacturer's website. If you did, remove that software, and then add the printer to Printers & Scanners again as AirPrint-enabled printer. The existing printer entry can and should then be removed.
As of this writing there are well over 6000 AirPrint-enabled printers and multifunction devices. Over 1000 of them are HP devices.
the model is hp officejet 5520 all in one
I keep getting an error message “PDE.plugin will damage you computer and I am unable to print
This solution worked for me. HP 1012 connected by USB to (ancient) airport express, in turn connected to 2019 iMac through ethernet. Mac OS 10.15.7 Catalina. Thanks !
PDE-plugin will damage your computer - not allowing me to print on HP printer
HP Envy Photo 7155
There are 158 HP AirPrint-enabled HP OfficeJet printers, but the HP OfficeJet 5520 All-in-One is not one of them.
😕
You will need to wait until HP fixes the problem they caused by releasing an update to their print driver software.
They may have done that by now. Check Software Update: How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support.
If not, contact HP or peruse their community help site which recently become overwhelmed with reports substantially identical to yours: HP Printer Setup, Software & Drivers.
