No sound using Apple Tv and a Yamaha surround sound receiver

I am having no luck getting any sound to come out of my TV after hooking up a Yamaha HTR-6130 Receiver with surround sound speakers to my Apple TV (ATV). I was given the sound system by inlaws who were literally just using it days ago, but they moved and wanted to go wireless.

The instructions for the Receiver are a bit dated so they dont really describe how to hook up an Apple TV. But all the online videos make it seem simple. I did run the receiver "speaker test" and it did produce static sound out of each speaker in turn - twice like it said it would if things are setup correctly. I cant get sound to come through the Apple TV, and since I cut the cord, thats pretty much ALL i need it to do.

Option 1:

HDMI from ATV to Receiver - I used the Receivers "HDMI (DTV/CBL)" port,

Then HDMI from Receiver- I used "HDMI Out" on receiver to HDMI on TV - I used "HDMI 1 (DVI)"

Or Option 2:

HDMI from ATV to Receiver - I used the Receivers "HDMI (DTV/CBL)" port,

Then Optical from ATV to Receiver ( I tried to the receiver and directly to the TV - didnt work either way.)

I tried both options above and no dice.

I DO have the receiver set to DTV/CBL (and tried ALL other options just in case).

I DID change my Samsung TV speakers from "TV" to "External Speakers"

And yes, I checked that the Yamaha remote is not on mute.

Hardware:

Apple TV - 3rd Generation

TV - Samsung LCD Series 6 - 610/630

Receiver - Yamaha HTR-6130 with 5 speakers + subwoofer (total of 6)

Im probably doing something wrong very basic and fundamental - but for the life of me I cant figure it out. Searched here and see others have had similar issues but nothing I found has worked for me.

Apple TV → [HDMI] → TV → [HDMI] → receiver (← probably most convenient in your situation)

or

Apple TV → [HDMI] → TV → [optical] → receiver (← set Audio Format to Dolby Digital 5.1 on Apple TV)

or

Apple TV → [HDMI] → AV receiver → [HDMI] → TV (← less inputs available [2 vs. 3] in your situation)

or

Apple TV → [HDMI] → TV (← receiver only available for one device)

↘︎ [optical] → receiver (← set Audio Format to Dolby Digital 5.1 on Apple TV)

Option 1:
HDMI from ATV to Receiver - I used the Receivers "HDMI (DTV/CBL)" port,
Then HDMI from Receiver- I used "HDMI Out" on receiver to HDMI on TV - I used "HDMI 1 (DVI)"

Eh, no. DVI is video only, no audio support through that port. Use HDMI-IN 2/3/4 instead. Using the DVI port would mean that you have to run the audio wiring separately. HDMI was meant to prevent that need.

Or Option 2:
HDMI from ATV to Receiver - I used the Receivers "HDMI (DTV/CBL)" port,
Then Optical from ATV to Receiver ( I tried to the receiver and directly to the TV - didnt work either way.)

Eh, no. No need for double audio wiring. HDMI carries both video and audio.

I have tried all scenarios and nothing is working. There must be some setting on my TV that is not allowing this to work - looked through manual and I am doing everything correct as far as I can tell. The problem probably is not the ATV, its something to do with connection from TV to Receiver.

Going to box up the sound system and give it back.
