iPad losing gps

I replaced an old iPad Air 2 (cellular) with a new iPad Air 3 (cellular) in June 2020, only to find the new iPad losing gps speed and heading frequently, reading zero knots and no heading on the Navionics boating app and the Garmin Pilot app. Restarts, Restores, reinstalling iOS and apps all failed to improve the performance. iPhone 7 running same apps in same locations never failed, always showing heading and speed. I understand that iPad Pro models are having same problems. I am awaiting a new replacement iPad Air 3 to see if that will perform correctly. This seems to be a hardware gps problem. Any other suggestions?

Hello Jpd211,

We understand that you're having some issues with GPS on your new iPad Air.

We suggest making sure that your new iPad is updated to iPadOS 14.1.

Also make sure that the Navionics and Garmin Pilot app are fully updated.

Unfortunately I have tried all of those things and the issue persists. The speed and heading suddenly stop. It occurs in at least three apps, Navionics Boat US, Garmin Pilot, and Commander Compass. If I physically shake the iPad, sometimes the speed and heading return, but not always. Others have reported the same problem in 2019 with their iPads. Is apple working on this?

Thanks

John
