Wireless Carplay issues once moving to IOS 14, 14.0.1 and then 14.1 (No issue when I had IOS 13.7)

I have a 2021 Kia K5 and the first few weeks my iPhone XR worked fine with the wireless Carplay (With the K5 you have to use wireless, cannot be wired). During this time I was on the latest IOS 13 version 13.7 and had no issues. In Sept, I ungraded to IOS 14 and immediately started having issues with Carplay, I waited for 14.0.1 and then 14.1 to see if it would have a fix but still nothing. The problem I have is at random times, sometimes after only a few minutes, sometime 10 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes Carplay disconnect enough for the car to show an error that says "Phone Not Responding. Please reconnect it and try again." (see picture) when this happens I am usually running Spotify and Waze or Google Maps. It happens multiple times throughout the drive. Also the music does not stop and I can hear the turn by turn directions but have to hit OK and then the Apple Carplay button again to see the Map screen (Very annoying and not safe when trying to navigate to a destination. So it seems that the apps are still connected and running but the phone disconnects wirelessly just enough for the car not to see the phone and produce the error. I have tried all combinations of forgetting the network and Bluetooth connection and resetting each both on the car and phone. Renaming the phone connection, restarting the device etc. I have tried everything suggested on multiple Websites/Forums and on this forum. Nothing helps. I also notice that many other people are having this issue since IOS 14 has come out, this is not a random issue it is wide spread and is occurring on multiple car platforms. My question is has this issue been noted and is it being addressed in IOS 14.2? If not Apple has to make the signed IOS 13.7 version available so we can downgrade the working version until this is fixed. It is not only inconvenient it is a safety hazard.

Thank you,

Rich

Fredoc, it’s very possible that a change in iOS scheduling exposed a flaw in the Kia implementation. This happens all the time in the software industry. I’ve seen it happen when a vendor cuts corners because they “discover” a hack that lets them get to market faster. Later someone who is following the API spec makes a legitimate change (for instance in how tasks are scheduled) and the race condition outcome that the hack was exploiting and relying on isn’t there anymore and now the hack fails. I trust Apple engineers that developed ACP and its protocols a heck of a lot more than the low bidder crew Kia probably farmed out the ACP implementation to.

Thanks. Guessing this is the case. When I first mentioned it to Kia I got “Never heard of this” responses. Once I showed them this thread I got “We have several customers complaining about this but it is Apples problem.” Told them since they sold me car and collected for CarPlay feature, then it is a Kia problem and they better resolve with Apple.

I have been working on this since I initially put up this post, and obviously getting more frustrated by the day. Here is the latest, I called Kia support to get an update on my case and what he told me is the issue they identified was that Apple made a change to CarPlay in iOS 14 and didn’t make KIA aware of it and this caused the problem. They have a fix to the infotainment software that is being tested and should come out soon. I wanted to know how soon but he didn’t know, I said I will keep calling weekly. The plus is they finally have acknowledged the problem and are working to fix it.

That's hilarious.

Any "changes Apple made in CarPlay" were present in the pre-release developer seeds, which Apple made available over two months before they released iOS 14 to the public.

Further, Apple doesn't make changes that arbitrarily break backwards compatibility (so if Kia's software worked with iOS 13, if they properly implemented the protocols it should work with iOS 14.)

Regardless, it is good that they identified a fix and will be releasing it soon.

This is amusing! My iPhone7 running IOS 14.3 loses screen connection every couple minutes on my Kia K5 (only connects wirelessly) but works just fine on wife’s Kia Niro (connected through cable). My wife has not updated her iPhone 7 to IOS14 (running 13.7) and it works better in my K5 but will eventually lose connection. This tells me problem existed prior to IOS14 and was amplified with update. Kia definitely passing the buck but will somehow “save the day” with their eventual update!

Which is the ONLY way this can be resolved. The calls for Apple to do something are amusing. Apple released the new update to Kia long before iOS 14 was released. It was up to Kia to ensure the software worked with their cars. Kia didn't. Kia has to fix it. Apple cannot roll out an update just for Kia owners, because Apple has not control over the infotainment software in Kia cars.

That said, it would stand to reason Kia and Apple engineers are working together to resolve this. It will just have to rolled out via software updates from Kia to Kia cars.

I am also having this problem. I purchased 3 KIA's since March. 2020 Kia Forte, 2021 Kia Forte and & 3 weeks ago, a 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid. The 2 Kia Forte's do not have this problem using Apple Carplay. Only the Sorento has the problem. But it is exactly the same problem that IronManCamper has. I took it to Kia today and the dealer called the Kia Corporate Tech center. They also blamed it on Apple. FYI, I tried 3 Iphone XR's and also purchased a genuine Apple cord for the cars USB connection. It is in fact a safety issue for obvious reasons. Something has to be done before somebody get hurt because of it.

Ever heard of the Blame Game? You have now. This is most oft response when a manufacturer drops the ball. I'm quite Apple and Kia are working together to fix this, but Apple provided Kia the API's for every iOS version well in advance of any public release. It's up to the manufacturers to implement the appropriate changes. I've said this before and I'll say it again, Apple doesn't own the code to Kia systems. Kia needs to work with Apple to get this right for all of you effected.

I've never once had a CarPlay integration issue with Mercedes. Very few manufacturers have issues. But if they do, the manufacturers have to work with Apple to fix it for their customers. Not the other way around.

Well said. I couldn't agree more. If this caught Kia off guard **AFTER** iOS 14 went public, then in my opinion, it's prima facia evidence that Kia wasn't as active as they should have been in Apple's developer programs and didn't thoroughly test with the pre-release iOS seeds. Whether that's a result of understaffing, COVID, negligence, incompetence or some other cause, they apparently missed the opportunity for this to be caught and fixed before the public release of iOS 14.x.

Definitely; the two have completely different head ends with different display sizes, and from what I have been able to find the Sorento's is "new for 2021," and their software platform will change to NVIDIA's as of 2022:
