MacBook Pro Late 2013 - can't use sidecar?

Is it really true that only the newest MacBook Pro's can use sidecar? I have a brand new ipad that I would like to use as a second screen with my MacBook Pro - is it possible even without sidecar?

An iPad Pro can be used with a compatible Mac to extend the Mac display to the iPad using the Catalina/iPadOS Sidecar feature.

An alternative third-party product, Duet, can be used to extend a PC or Mac to an iPad:

Here is a third-party comparison of some of the options - including a detailed look at SideCar.
