iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

I have multiple versions of iPhone and been extremely care with this one because of the hefty price tag. The screen was scratched in less than 2 weeks while I was deciding if I want life proof case versus other brand. I have 2 other iPhones that did have case for much longer and the screen stayed in prestige condition. You are entitled expressed your point of view but I don’t think it’s your place to minimize other people voice just because they are different from yours.

It’s not minimizing others’ opinions, it’s factual data.

• The glass is more scratch-resistant than that on the iPhone 11.

• The glass is softer and more prone to scratching than on much older iPhones as it is more shatter-resistant.

• For maximum protection a screen protector should always be applied immediately after removing the iPhone from its box and before using the screen in any way.

• While you are deciding on a case your phone is completely unprotected.

HOWEVER...

although I agree with some of what dogcow moof states

I think MANY of us feel/think ~

A warning/caution paper/notice - ON TOP, WHEN YOU OPEN THE NEW PHONE

OR maybe a thin plastic cover ON THE PHONE SCREEN.

Should be included to REMIND/EXPLAIN AND WARN the purchaser

This phone was very expensive. We were owed the information (that dogcow moof wrote above - and I’ve quoted his info below)

-this is a MUCH softer, MORE PRONE TO SCRATCHES screen than previous versions of the phone)

As dogcow moof explained above ~

”• The glass is softer and more prone to scratching than on much older iPhones as it is more shatter-resistant.

• For maximum protection a screen protector should always be applied immediately after removing the iPhone from its box and before using the screen in any way.”

Many of us have been EXTREMELY LOYAL, LONG TIME iPhone purchasers.

Apple should NOW (and should have) made the difference apparent to EVERY PURCHASER.

OBVIOUSLY, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A HUGE INVESTMENT FOR APPLE!

and would have avoided many unhappy customers.

At this point in the product cycle, a brief Internet search would have told you all you reference and more.

The glass changes in the industry as a whole have been occurring for years now; this article dates to 2018:

The Verge: WHY YOUR BRAND-NEW SMARTPHONE WILL SCRATCH JUST AS EASILY AS YOUR OLD ONE

What I stated about applying a screen protector before even turning it on?

That's been standard procedure for every iPhone I've ever owned; it's like driving a new car off a dealer lot without making sure your auto insurance will cover it.

I know so many people who owned beater cars for decades and had no issues, bought their first expensive new car and were involved in an accident through no fault of their own within hours of purchasing it.

I also noticed a small scratch appear on my iPhone 12 Mini screen. Like other people posting I have been extremely careful with my expensive new phone. I owned my original iPhone SE for 4 years and had no such issues. A couple of weeks after buying the Mini a noticeable scratch appeared on the "super strong ceramic glass front screen". Apple I am not impressed.

It doesn't matter what whatever old phone you had was like; it had glass that might have been harder to scratch but was much more likely to shatter, it doesn't matter if yours ever broke or not,

The industry has moved to glass that is less likely to shatter and may be slightly more scratch prone, because a $30 screen protector stops all scratches, where no screen protector can stop shattering.

It also is stronger, as compared to the glass on the iPhone 11; that source of comparison can be found directly on the Apple web site.

I just got my iPhone 12 last month - and I specifically wanted this over the iPhone 11 because it was advertised with the new Ceramic Shield front. As ceramic cookware is thought to be scratch resistant, I was under the impression that this would be too. I was so disappointed when I found a very tiny, but deep scratch in the display after just one single month of taking care of it like it was a baby 🙁.

My iPhone 10, I previously owned had not one single scratch in the two years I owned it. I have never used screen protectors on my iPhones because I have never had issues like this. Maybe I will have to go for the iPhone 11, since it uses a different display. I would rather have my screen crack than having to use an ugly screen protector on my beautiful iPhone. And it feels better to touch the display than the feel when typing on a screen protector.

So basically you made assumptions based upon how ceramics are used in other industries, didn't bother to apply a $30 screen protector, and this is all somehow Apple's fault?

What happened with past phones is of no consequence; most people haven't been in an auto accident but driving without insurance wouldn't be a wise move.

If you're going to not use a screen protector, then your screen may scratch because of debris or because it rubbed against something, that's the bottom line.

Why are you so obsessed with screen protectors? This was something people used to use - but nowadays I see no one use it, because the displays on phones have gotten better. I don’t think Apple would sell an expensive phone and then except me to purchase a cheap plastic protector for my screen - the protection is usually built into the display. And besides it would be huge waste of plastic if everyone had to put plastic on their phone. Fortunately for me, I do already have an insurance for display damage.

I’m just disappointed that my new iPhone could get such a deep scratch that I can feel when using the display, when it was supposed to be a strong display. I might have gotten scratches on my previous phones, but not something I could feel, only something I would notice if I put it under a bright light. I just feel like this was a downgrade and the display on my iPhone 10 was better and stronger.

That statement couldn't be less accurate if you tried. Go to an Apple or Best Buy store and see how many screen protectors are installed on phones daily. The numbers would obviously surprise you. I'm sorry you're disappointed with your phone. But it's not anyone's fault but your fault to have spent so much money on a new phone and not do anything to protect it. Glass is fragile, no matter what its made of. No one has yet to create glass which can't be scratched.

And if you took the time to read what Apple says of Ceramic Shield at www.apple.com, you'd clearly see they made no mention of the phone being more scratch resistant. They clearly said the phone is and this is a quote from Apple directly: "And Ceramic Shield delivers four times better drop performance." This means iPhone 12 is 4 times less likely to shatter in a fall. And the fact that we rarely see people coming here to complain their iPhone 12 sceen shattered, is testament to the strength of the new glass.

The last phone I owned which I didn't put a screen protector on was iPhone 6. At the end of two years, it looked like it had been rubbed with sand. Since then, every iPhone I have owned has been protected by a screen protector and my phones remain pristine.

It's a shame you didn't do the research to understand what Ceramic Shield is about. And your assertion people don't put screens on their phones, couldn't be further from the truth. There is not a single iPhone in my office which is naked. Not one. And every time I visit my local Apple Store, they are installing new screen protectors all over the store.

Lol. “..never even touch the screen until a screen protector has been applied”. Sorry, this is just funny to read - like my phone is made out of some cheap materials - I’ve had numerous of Apple products, and I put my hands on them as soon as it’s out of the box 👏 - they are supposed to work just like that.

I guess we just have to agree that we disagree about this. I understand you are trying explain the rationale in having a screen protector (thank you for that). I’m just trying to explain how I prefer to use my phone without one - and how I preferred that my previous iPhone display might be more prone to shattering but at the same time being more scratch resistant. I just wish it would have been more clear that the new display had this disadvantage - then I would have decided for the iPhone 11 instead. As long as my phone is an iPhone, I’m happy, I would just rather have the display shattered than getting all kinds of annoying scratches.

It is absolutely your right to not use a screen protector. I do find it amazing you'd rather spend $$Hundreds of dollars replacing a shattered screen as opposed to $30 for a good quality tempered glass screen protector, which feels just as good as the iPhone screen itself, actually has better finger print/smudge protection and can also add even more protection from a shattered screen in a fall. Different strokes, I guess.

But what you can't do, is complain if your screen gets scratched without a protector because NO ONE has created glass which can't be scratched. So enjoy your phone without a protector and understand it can scratch and just live with the scratches. Of course if you're very rich and you can somehow create glass which can't be scratched, you'll become richer beyond your wildest dreams. I hope you do that.
