How to stop Music automatically importing and playing downloaded music files?

I download files to use in my Final Cut projects, but each time I do so Music automatically imports the files into my library and (even worse) starts playing them. There must be an easy way to stop this happening but I haven't found it! Help!

The files are downloaded by Safari to Downloads and there is no option to choose a different location AFAIK. However you gave me an idea — I just tried Firefox which does give the option to 'open with Music (default)' or just 'save file'. I chose the latter and it downloaded without importing to Music or playing the file. So there must be an OS or Safari preference somewhere that says that files of a particular type are automatically opened by this or that application. It's just that I don't know where it is.
