Laptop does not recognize my password

I've followed all of the steps for preparing my laptop for trade-in but I want to check my laptop to be sure everything is gone. The home screen comes up with my name and picture but will not allow me to log in using my password.

Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for Keyboard) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. It may take up to 3 times to reset each. So, be certain you have the time to do so. Use a different external keyboard, if available option.
