Samsung Portable SSD T5 Will Not Mount/Software Does Not Work

Hi Everyone,

I have a Samsung Portable SSD T5 external hard drive. Recently, I cannot get the software for the Portable SSD to open and run. When it launches, it closes immediately. Oddly, I'm able to use the external HD for time machine backups.

I contacted Samsung and they gave me instructions to uninstall and re-install the software. That did not help. I formatted the drive (APFS) and that did not help. Samsung told me to contact Apple thinking something was blocking the software from running, so I am starting with this wonderful community.

I'm totally stuck and frustrated.

Any suggestions?

You should not need to use the Seagate proprietary software in order to use the external drive. Uninstall the software by following the developer's instructions. Make sure to reboot the Mac.

Use Disk Utility to erase the external drive as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled). I do not recommend using APFS since it is still so new and tends to become corrupted such that Disk Utility First Aid is unable to repair it. Also if you are using the drive for Time Machine I believe it needs to be formatted with MacOS Extended (Journaled).

If you still have problems, then try using another USB port (especially on the other side if using a laptop).

To look for software issues run EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

It also wouldn't hurt to run the Apple Diagnostics to see if the Mac has any hardware issues.
