No mountable file systems Issue

Hi everyone, I've been trying to open a .dmg file of a software I purchased recently but I keep getting this "No mountable file systems" Error.

I've already tried:

  • hdiutil attach -verbose method (previously downloaded with curl -O) method
  • hdiutil attach –noverify –nomount disk.dmg --> diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk1 method
  • Re-downloading from different browsers
  • Doing it while on safe boot mode
  • Literally every method on the internet except re-installing OS which I'm not going to for just a couple apps that doesn´t work

I'm running iOS 10.11.6 on a 13-inch mid-2012 macbook pro

type (bundle): HFS

Please help!

thanks in advance

Try running Disk Utility First Aid on your boot drive.

There is a chance the .dmg file was created using a newer version of macOS and perhaps is using some feature or layout that macOS 10.11 doesn't know about.

FYI, I have had problems opening .dmg files in the past where I had to erase the whole drive and reinstall macOS because something with the current macOS installation corrupted downloaded archives.

Sounds like you have a broken .dmg file. If you still have problems, then contact the person who created the .dmg file to report the issue to them.

I manage a fleet of company Macs and have two 2012 MacBook Pros myself at home. I suggest you download and install macOS 10.12 "Sierra" - I call it the "last great Mac OS." It is a painless upgrade, not at all like a reinstall.

You can download Sierra by following the link on this page:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT20820

and ignoring Apple's pleas to install Catalina-- Mac OSes after 10.12 changed the file format of the hard drive to APFS, which is optimized for Solid State Drives (SSDs) and they run like dogs on older equipment with hard drives. 10.12 is more compatible with some newer stuff. You may find the computer will mount that DMG just fine after the upgrade.

Good luck.
