3G on iPhone 12

I have just bought the iPhone 12 in the UK and and am very annoyed that there seems no way to switch the phone to use 3G data networks. 5g is limited here, 4g is very unreliable and when supposedly connected to 4g i often don’t get a data connection. I would like the option to use 3g if I want as otherwise my very expensive new phone is completely useless..! We have vast parts of the country where only 3G is available and the phone won’t contact to the network. How have apple completely overlooked this issue? Can Apple please fix this in the next software update? I can’t be the only person with this issue - I make me want to revert to my iPhone X...!!

Apple should updates its software to able the 3G selection. It is something so simple. small thing but big difference for user which are in country-side. Please do it asap

Since you apparently didn’t bother to read any of the thread you posted to, I will again point out the flaw in your idea that has been suggested many times in the thread. But I will make it really clear: APPLE DOES NOT CONTROL ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH CELLULAR SETTINGS. THE SWITCHES AVAILABLE TO SELECT CELLULAR OPTIONS ARE PLACED ON THE PHONE BY THE CARRIER. NOT BY APPLE. The cellular settings file INSTALLED BY THE CARRIER, NOT BY APPLE, defines the switches that are available.

So if you want a 3G switch contact your carrier; Apple has nothing to do with it. As carriers are in the process of shutting down their 3G networks it’s unlikely they will want to encourage anyone to use 3G, but you can always ask.

I think that is the point of this post, other people are seeing the same issue. Are you saying that you can select 3G on your iPhone 12 in voice and data settings? TomLondon74 reported that he bought an iPhone12 and he can't select 3G because 5G is limited and 4G is unreliable, exactly my problem. I don't understand why it would be in the best interest of my carrier to limit the choices, isn't that just going to make me choose a different carrier?

I guess what I don't understand is why Apple senior support doesn't agree with you (at least the rep I spoke with). No response from my Feedback request saying that it's my carrier, no response from my email to Tim Cook saying, oh this isn't us, it's your carrier. No one from Apple jumping on this list indicating it's the carrier.

What is happening in the US is not necessarily happening elsewhere.

Based on Apple support saying it's Apple, I believe them over you saying it's the carrier.

I upgraded from an Iphone6S last week. 11/12/20. today is 11/19/20. had all the issues mentioned above. long story short I accidently reconignized the phone numbers before did not require the area code when i called with I6... I inserted area code 0n my I12 and Bingo! Got one test to confirm this worked when with my house modem. I'm in office with different model Internet provided modem which is where I discovered that may be the issue. I'm relieved but not confident yet.

I just got a new iPhone 12 for work, set it up, went to set it to 3g and see it's not a choice. I have the exact same problem as TomLondon74. Even though I'm in Miami, there is a dead zone where 4g doesn't work and 5g isn't an option. I am REQUIRED to talk on this phone for a living and now have no reception. I will now have to use my personal phone to call clients (from a number they don't recognize) or else get fired from my job.

THIS ISN'T A JOKE! APPLE - IF YOU'RE LISTENING - PLEASE ADD THE OPTION TO DOWNGRADE TO 3G BACK TO THE PHONE!!!

Hey man, I get your someone that really likes to be right, I’m just trying to help folks out so they don’t have misguided expectations about the iPhone 12.

you wrote “The phone will still work on 3G, however, if 4G and 5G are not available.”

And I’m just trying to point out that this is not true, at least not for Verizon… It’s not clear if other carriers are allowing 3G on the iPhone 12, but what I heard from Verizon is that they are not.

How do I turn notifications off for this thread. It is just going round and round in circles with the same info and people just do not understand 🤦🏻‍♂️

::sigh:: There’s a major bug in the forum software that complicates the process. Ideally, you just click “Following” at the top of the page. But if you have made a lot of posts to the thread you need to repeat this as many times as you have posted in the thread. So here is the algorithm:

  1. Click Following - it will change to “Follow"
  2. Click to refresh the page
  3. If it says “Following” again GOTO 1.
  4. If it says “Follow” after refreshing the page you have been unsubscribed.

BTW, part of the problem with threads like this is people post to them without reading the thread, so they are starting over each time. We have one thread with 80 pages currently that just keep repeating the same question followed by the same answer.

I don’t understand how 3g is being phased out when the LTE coverage sucks so bad it borders on unusable in many places. The debate shouldn’t be about who’s fault it is but rather how to solve the problem. Many people still need and rely on 3g coverage and when the phone gets a hint of LTE it switches to that even though it’s often too weak or congested to be useful. So having the option to force 3g at times is extremely helpful and might be why I have to stay on my iPhone X and return this 12.

I do not work for apple or any of the network providers. I do not have the answer to this. Is there anyone on this thread that does? Let’s get some official responses from them before we all say that we are returning devices because of poor network coverage. Let’s face it it. Have have been reading responses and that is ultimately what it is about.

turn on your WiFi call option and jump on WiFi to use your phone if you don’t have a signal. I have had to do that in my house for years on previous models.

its like magic I have a signal and can use my phone indoors where there is no signal 🎉

I think people in this thread are just over reacting to a simple problem and let’s all face it. In this day and age you are not far from WiFi. Most providers share broadband for when you are out and about so you can jump on them anyway. So I really do not know why people are complaining about a 3G button

GGGGGG

mid you watch Rupauls dragrace you get the 5G’s reference
