3G on iPhone 12

I have just bought the iPhone 12 in the UK and and am very annoyed that there seems no way to switch the phone to use 3G data networks. 5g is limited here, 4g is very unreliable and when supposedly connected to 4g i often don’t get a data connection. I would like the option to use 3g if I want as otherwise my very expensive new phone is completely useless..! We have vast parts of the country where only 3G is available and the phone won’t contact to the network. How have apple completely overlooked this issue? Can Apple please fix this in the next software update? I can’t be the only person with this issue - I make me want to revert to my iPhone X...!!

Apple should updates its software to able the 3G selection. It is something so simple. small thing but big difference for user which are in country-side. Please do it asap

Since you apparently didn’t bother to read any of the thread you posted to, I will again point out the flaw in your idea that has been suggested many times in the thread. But I will make it really clear: APPLE DOES NOT CONTROL ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH CELLULAR SETTINGS. THE SWITCHES AVAILABLE TO SELECT CELLULAR OPTIONS ARE PLACED ON THE PHONE BY THE CARRIER. NOT BY APPLE. The cellular settings file INSTALLED BY THE CARRIER, NOT BY APPLE, defines the switches that are available.

So if you want a 3G switch contact your carrier; Apple has nothing to do with it. As carriers are in the process of shutting down their 3G networks it’s unlikely they will want to encourage anyone to use 3G, but you can always ask.

This hits the nail on the head

one bar of 4g = crap signal and dropouts.

was mildly irritating when i could lock 4g out now its an utter pita when im driving remote - ive kept my old phone and have that locked to 3g.

id suggest its a good enough reason to be able to return the phone as not fit for purpose.

oh btw you can fix it when standing under a 3g tower or using cel fi - simply place your $2000 phone inside a tin can!!!

The original part of this post was about how Verizon is not offering 3G support for iPhone 12, and that’s true that with GSM carriers around Europe and everywhere around the world, it automatically switches to 3G, but 3G on EVDO is not supported with 5G Sim cards.

I don’t understand why people want to switch to 3G when there are more bars, more bars does not mean more coverage in speed, you are lucky if you have one bar of 4G/LTE, I also do not understand why people didn’t want to switch to edge back in 2012 when the iPhone 5 came out, back in the day, edge has more bars than 3G, and now we have this thread complaining about not getting 3G.

Mate we get that the carrier chooses the option - thats not the issue.

the issue is that we have - for years - had to use that function to lock out 4g as when there is one bar of 4g our calls drop out constantly.

this oisnt something we should have to do - if you have lots of bars of 3g and 1 bar of 4g then the phone should automatically lock to 3g for calls

this is a no brainer.

in the UK, Giffgaff and talk mobile will be the only options at this time.

there are plenty of options here in the US such as boost mobile. But in the US, only the big wireless carriers offer 5G, and several other MVNO‘s, I looked through the Apple support articles and in the UK only two mobile carriers that do not offer 5G and the US has approximately 30 carriers that do not offer 5G

I am sorry but I did not buy an iPhone 12 for 5G but for tons of other reasons. And there is French saying that says : who can do the most can do the least.

in other word if you do 5G. You can do 3G. If it helps thousands of people and it is a simple firmware fix, then Apple should do it, without us arguing about it. When you pay this much for a smarphone, a good service should follow. And as long as 3G exists in the world, Apple will have to continue offering such options...

I cant sale my phone since its a gift from my company. So i am stuck without i-net or with very slow mobile i-net at least over wifi you dont have such limitation from apple yet. I actually have 2 phones from the company 1 android flagship and this one, with android i got better battery life and more control.

I spoke with all carriers today in BG none of them will turn 3G anytime soon

they even offer 2g network , bg is not usa dont compare it.

Right now i am using only 4g/lte since i dont have any 5g at all. but speed is terrible extremely slow and with cellphone i-net phone is unusable... unfortunately i-net never go to 3g again :(

even at 1 bar still uses 4g lte.
