3G on iPhone 12

I have just bought the iPhone 12 in the UK and and am very annoyed that there seems no way to switch the phone to use 3G data networks. 5g is limited here, 4g is very unreliable and when supposedly connected to 4g i often don’t get a data connection. I would like the option to use 3g if I want as otherwise my very expensive new phone is completely useless..! We have vast parts of the country where only 3G is available and the phone won’t contact to the network. How have apple completely overlooked this issue? Can Apple please fix this in the next software update? I can’t be the only person with this issue - I make me want to revert to my iPhone X...!!

Apple should updates its software to able the 3G selection. It is something so simple. small thing but big difference for user which are in country-side. Please do it asap

Since you apparently didn’t bother to read any of the thread you posted to, I will again point out the flaw in your idea that has been suggested many times in the thread. But I will make it really clear: APPLE DOES NOT CONTROL ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH CELLULAR SETTINGS. THE SWITCHES AVAILABLE TO SELECT CELLULAR OPTIONS ARE PLACED ON THE PHONE BY THE CARRIER. NOT BY APPLE. The cellular settings file INSTALLED BY THE CARRIER, NOT BY APPLE, defines the switches that are available.

So if you want a 3G switch contact your carrier; Apple has nothing to do with it. As carriers are in the process of shutting down their 3G networks it’s unlikely they will want to encourage anyone to use 3G, but you can always ask.

I see one phone that purportedly runs android and some unidentified brand of iPhone. How does this prove all other phones do this.

When was this picture taken? I don't know of any cell providers that still run 2G. And the android system works differently in handling Carrier Settings than iOS does. If it is an affiliated carrier the carrier provides a Carrier Settings file which contains all of relevant APN settings in that file to Apple and tells them this is the version we want on iPhones on our network. Apple then includes that file in their next update. If you know someone running an older version of iOS on your network check the version number of their carrier settings file and yours.

There is no point in upgrading, the only option is to switch to a different cellular network, battery life is the same regardless of which network type you choose, unless you turn on 5G on demand, which is also known as enable 5G, choosing 5G auto is the best option.

my point is if you switch to a different carrier, you might get better coverage and even faster speeds then 3G and more battery lif because if you have one bar of 4G/LTE, the phone might constantly search for signal, carrier should build more towers so to be prepared for the 3G sunset in the future.

I dont have same phone iphone 12 mini with ios 14.2 since i uograded last night and problems started but i have my other phone from which i posted pictures on older firmware , in BG no one have 5G even if they claim there is 5G in one building in the capital and thats all false marketing claims from carriers about 4g we have in some places but most suffer and u get 1 bar , so my only option is to use best possible infrastructure here 3g which is available everywhere or at least in more places compared to 4g lte and 0 existing 5g , but i lost control over my phone now apple control it and instead of switching to full bars of coverage on my 3g they drain my battery like crazy with super slow 1 bar 4g in most places which again i dont find reasonable. I dont think that 3G will leave and ceize to exist at least in the next 10 years, at least here in developing countries like BG in Usa can be removed from carriers but here we dont have that much people and money and infrastructure to build 4g and 5g.

Yes, the iPhone, and all other 5G compatible phones, are optimized for use with 5G

The Apple Support guys are correct but the carrier MUST send Apple a carriers setting files that offers that. At this point most will not.

Your final paragraph is too rambling to cover.

I'm not sure why you are still posting here, you obviously don't like Apple as a company and it is clear that your current phone does not meet your individual needs. You should sell it privately (thankfully iPhones have good resale value) and then buy a different phone that meets your needs. And then when your carrier turns off the 3G network you can blame that manufacturer for the problem.

Why would Apple enforce 5G? They don't get any money from your carrier using it. But then again your carrier can make more money by having you use it and your carrier provides the carrier settings file for your iPhone so....

Phones running the android OS system work differently and often there is no agreement involved between the carrier and the various models of phones that run android. Let me know when you are done testing all of them.

But honestly if this is that big of deal to you it appears you bought the wrong smartphone for your needs. Sell yours on the open market and use the proceeds to purchase one of the smartphones that runs android OS so you can lock it to 3G. I would suggest you check it before you buy it to make sure you do not run into the same issue again. At this point your problem will be solved until your carrier turns off 3G.

This is the latest version of the carrier. The carrier needs to upgrade the towers to support more 4G so the battery life will not be as bad, the only reason why the battery life isn’t good is because it keeps searching for a signal, maybe you should try having 4G instead of 5G auto turned on, usually if you send a lot of traffic to the 4G Internet and it fails, it will drop to 3G, unless the signal is higher than 126 DBM

It is crystal clear that you believe it.

I will once you provide some evidence. You guys keep repeating it but I asked several times as to what the format/protocol of these files are and got nothing. My current evidence is:

  • 30+ years in telecoms software development and sales engineering in close contact with product/development teams. Integrating products into carrier networks and inter carrier negotiations. I know there is a way of doing things and what you are saying doesn't resonate with this.
  • When it comes to these integrations, the company with more influence would have the upperhand and dictate the agreement. And guess who would that be, not my backwater service provider unless they can afford not to support apple phones...
  • On the other hand, Android phones can do it. And guess which of the many manufacturers be able to dictate terms to a carrier? One+? Xiaomi?
  • My carrier and several others' in this thread confirmed that it has got nothing to do with them.
  • All I hear is some workaround suggestions for what appears to be poor Apple design.
  • From where I stand, Apple chose to implement only N'G and N-1'G (5G and 4G if 5G available and 4G and 3G if 5G not available) in the phone menu and the workaround you are suggesting is to pester you carrier to send you a special profile with 5G omitted rather than fixing the menu software.

I will agree with you if you can provide any actual evidence/proof of what you are saying. Otherwise please stop flooding the group with, in absence of evidence, hearsay...
