I can't open my locked (old) iphone 6, it won't accept my passcode, and is now disabled, can I unlock it from itunes? phone says connect to itunes but nothing happens when I connect it.

Actually, that’s covered in the link kb posted.
UPDATE: While it is covered, it isn’t as explicit as you stated it, so you were right to add that. It just says use “Finder or iTunes” in the link, probably because soon it would have to say “Catalina or Big Sur”.

No. That’s why Apple give you several ways to sync and back up your content, to protect it against disasters. But you have to use them.
Well that sucks. It's an old phone, but it would be great if they made an option via icloud login or something.
