Lag between pressing a keyboard button and when the character appear on screen

When I type there is a lag between me pressing a keyboard button and the character appearing on the screen. I'm using an external Mac keyboard and connected with Bluetooth. Makes typing almost impossible. I have reinstalled the OS with no improvement. It does not appear the Bluetooth mouse have the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.
