Dual boot

I have a Macbook Pro Late 2011 with the video on the main board that failed. I removed the SSD and installed it in an external USB case.

I purchased a iMac 21.5 with Catalina OS. I’ve been able to transfer my files from the SSD onto the iMac. I’ve created a partition for a second drive on the iMac.

I am not able to get the iMac to boot from the MBPro SSD.

I want to be able to use my 32 bit programs on the second partition.

You won't be able to boot into an older system with the iMac. Macs can not boot into systems older than the one that it came with originally.

You'll have to find updates, upgrades or alternatives for those apps. Which apps are you concerned about?

Is SnapScan a scanner? If so what model? Did you check the manufacturer's website for Catalina compatible drivers? If there are none VueScan is an outstanding scanning app that supports just about every scanner available to date. It has a demo mode you can try.

The Adobe products would have to be upgraded at some considerable cost. I had Photoshop CS3 and ended getting Photoshop Elements 2020. I never used Adobe's organizer so that didn't affect me. I use Photos which is an alternative to Lightroom.

The bottom line is you won't be able to run those apps on your new machine without updates or upgrades.

To find out which other apps won't work download and run on your 2011 Mac the free GO64 app. It can quickly tell you what apps you'll have to replace.

I tried Parallels, and the result is that Catalina will not let High Sierra download and Mojave won't work with my 32 bit apps. In searching for an alternative I contacted an IT person that I know. He suggested that my motherboard might be OK.

I explained to him that when I boot the MBP the video falters and goes black. When I researched the cause on the net I found that this particular mb has the video chip integral with the mb and often the video chip fails. I concluded that this was my problem. My tech suggested several things to try. First was booting into safe mode, that didn't work. Next was to reset the NVRAM. It worked and my MBP is working fine now.

To reset NVRAM:

1) Turn off MBP. Hold the power button for an extended period.

2) Press the power key.

3) Wait for your Mac to start loading.

4) When you hear the startup sound, press and hold Cmd+Option+P+R

5) Keep pressing the keys until you hear a second startup sound.

Thank you for your help.
