iPhone 12 pro picture file size

I noticed that the file size has increased substantially with pictures taken with the iPhone 12 pro. Pictures that I took with my iPhone 8+ were less than 1mb in size. Now, pictures taken with my iPhone 12 pro are anywhere from 1.8mb to 2.2mb in size.

Anyone else seeing this? I first noticed this when I sent a picture via text and the picture didn't come through in the message (it had to be downloaded).

I'm wondering if there's a way to shrink the file size of the pictures without having to use a 3rd party app to adjust it. I'm not doing anything special with the camera when I'm taking pictures.
