ios 14 updated - lost text messages older than 1year

My phone updated last night to ios 14. Today, I have no text messages older than a year ago. Prior to the update, my entire text history was available. How do I recover all of the missing messages? I went to icloud via settings and messages was toggled off (which it wasn’t previously). I toggled it on, plugged in my phone and changed the save settings to forever for text messages. I restarted my phone. Nothing has worked. Less than a year ago, I got the newest iPhone SE and my entire message history transferred over. Why suddenly is it gone?

Hi there Eab5555,

Thanks for using Apple support Communities. It sounds like you do not have your messages older than one year. You mentioned changing your settings to keep forever. What was it set to before changing that setting? If it was set to 1 year before you changed it, your messages older than a year would already have been deleted and would not be recoverable. Learn more about messages in iOS 14 here: Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

We hope this helps!
