Texting from my iPad.

iMessage is really starting to drive me insane. How on earth to I text to a device that does not have iMessage?

Do you have an iPhone - or just an iPad?

An iPad, whether a Cellular model or not, is not capable of directly accessing Cellular Voice or SMS/MMS Messaging features. An iPad with either WiFi or Cellular connectivity alone can only access IP-data services.

However, If paired with an iPhone, the capabilities of iPad significantly broaden to include access to Cellular Voice and Messaging services of the associated iPhone - relayed to the iPad over WiFi using Apple’s continuity features.

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID, to send SMS/MMS messages from your iPad you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your iPad on your iPhone...

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices.

Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON

I have both an iPhone and an iPad. Both have the same Apple ID. Both are cellular enabled so I am not reliant on wifi particularly with my iPad. My plan with my network is unlimited talk and text. I receive texts from individuals and businesses that only have android devices. It seems to be a new phenomena as I had previously been able to do this. I keep my devices upgraded so I will double check to see if they are updated. I also have a virus plan for all my devices. One of the interesting things is that when a text doesn’t go and you get the exclamation mark I click on it and do not get the option to send by text messaging. I have stopped using the wifi as we got a new cable system and new password etc. I chatted with Apple yesterday with Deepanshu. AFTER informing him that I had unlimited talk and text with my provider that included 20 gig plan, he informed me that I have to talk to my provider about getting a sms plan - grrrrrr. I asked to be put through to someone who had knowledge of apple products 😉 and he sent me a information link before signing off. I tried to turn off my iMessage as on my previous iPad there was an option somewhere where you could uncheck it as a default. I am just going to ensure I have turned off wifi on both devices, ensure my phone number is used for messaging (mind you why would that be necessary when my cellular iPad has its own phone number)
