Mail no longer working on MacBook Pro after upgrading OS to Catalina

Hi Apple community,

I upgraded OS on my MacBook Pro (bought in 2014, late 2013 model) to Catalina recently and the Mail apps stopped working.

After the upgrading, when I opened Mail for the first time, I was prompted to choose Mail account provider:

After choosing google, I was directed to enter email address and password from browser, and then the a window popped out, telling me that this account already exists.

After clicking "OK", the Mail app was closed...

The loop goes on and on and there is now no way to use Mail...

Has anyone experienced the same issue? How to resolve it? The specs of my MacBook pro is as follows:

Thanks

Hi everyone,

update: I managed to get mails back when I tried to delete the current email account associate with Mail apps

https://support.apple.com/en-nz/guide/mail/cpmlprefacctadv/mac

interestingly, after selecting my existing account associated with Mail, the account was not removed. When I rebooted the Mail apps, the pop up windows as described in my first post never appeared again. At first no mails had been downloaded yet.

After closing Mail apps and opening it again a few times, the Apps could receive mails from gmail server.
