ipad passcode after update iOS 14.1

iPad is setup with no passcode. However after 14.1 auto update, iPad asks for passcode. As it was not setup, cannot finish setup. I know of a number of people (typically elderly that don’t use passcodes) now have their iPads unusable. Not great Apple especially in this time of lockdowns where FaceTime is a very important app. Can anyone suggest a fix for this issue ? Note the persons in question do not have Macs to restore or reset they iPad. Thanks !

If your iPad is disabled - or the Passcode is unknown or forgotten, you’ll need to follow this process:

If you’ve forgotten the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled – Apple Support

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).

You’ll also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

When you recover access to your credentials, you would be well advised to log-in to your AppleID account from a web browser - and verify/update any email addresses and trusted telephone numbers:

Thanks for the update and was aware of this. However, it must be a bug in the 14.1 update process if the update "assumes" that a passcode has been previously setup. If one has not been, as is the case, the ipad becomes unusable as one cannot complete the setup process. I know of a number of people who are in the situation. I imagine many 100 of thousands are also in the same boat.

All of us can image anything that we like - but it doesn’t change the mechanics of how to resolve the immediate issue.

Is it asking for a passcode or asking the user to create a passcode.
