docking station

I purchased a Soferell USB TYPE-C HUB PRO "docking station" for my MacBook Pro 15" (2017) laptop. I was dismayed when nothing worked. It had the correct form factor to fit the two USB-C ports on the left side of the MacBook, and the light came on when connect to the AC power source, but none of the ports worked at all.

After some frustration, I found some obscure article on the web about how the newer MacBook Pro laptops use USB-C Thunderbolt (which seems confusing, since my previous Mac laptop had "Thunderbolt" outlets that were a different form factor). What's the deal?

Are there any docking stations out there that connect to my 2017 MacBook Pro? I cannot connect my new Superdrive (which has the old, standard USB-2 connector), nor my Thunderbolt display (actually, I do have an adapter cable that works perfectly for that), nor use the XDMI ports on the docking station. Nothing works.

Thunderbolt 3 uses the same plug and is compatible with USB-C, but TB3 is faster.

I can’t find details on the dock you mention, but generally speaking the $50-100 docks don’t perform well. Docks from Brydge, OWC, Elgato, Belkin and Kensington work well with Macs. You’ll need to spend >$200 for a dual monitor dock; if you only need one display the Brydge Stone II is a good choice.
