My Mail on iPad screen shows a wide message sidebar
My mail screen shows a wide message sidebar which makes the message display much smaller than it should be. How do I expand the message to full screen or at least make it larger?
The Mail sidebar in iPadOS 14 now occupies about one third of the screen width in the Landscape view - whereas earlier versions of iOS/iPadOS used to occupy about one quarter of the screen. This is not configurable.

The instructions to tap on a message in order to view the entire email does not work. Alternatively I’d like to shrink the width of the sidebar so I can see more of the message.
Since the latest upgrade I have to zoom in on the body of an email and move it around in order to read it. I can’t imagine that’s how Apple intended.
I’ve seen instructions indicating that you can tap on an email preview and it becomes full screen. Is this accurate and if so how do I get this feature to work?
You can transform the preview window into either a slide-over, split view or full screen by using standard multitasking gestures.
Touch and hold the preview window, then drag to the centre-top edge of the screen to open as new full screen window - or to the left or right screen for Slide-over or Split View.
