What it “telling” you that you “must” update you Mac in order to connect your iPhone?

Are you running macOS 10.12 something on your MacBook Pro 17”, as per the info line under your Original Post? What model year?

What exact message are you getting when you connect your iPhone (via cable) to your Mac?

Is the message coming from iTunes?

(Incidentally, Operating System [OS] updates don’t always cause our machines to “get slower”, but they can become incompatible with some old software that we use. However, I can understand your concern.)

I’m still running an old MacBook that can’t be upgraded past High Sierra (which it is running), yet I was able to connect its iTunes to my latest iPad, by allowing iTunes to install its update.
