I was using finder on my iMac to try to find a way to optimize my iMacs performance and up popped "Detox My Mac"-Clean Up and Speed Up Your Mac!. My question is: is it safe, effective and reliable? And is it necessary?

I'm going to give it a thumbs down. The best cleaning, security, antivirus and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. Simply keep it up to date and otherwise just leave it alone and your Mac should run very well for years. It is when users begin intervening and adding third party "maintenance" apps that is when Mac OS gets slow, unstable and acts odd. Please just leave it be. If you are experiencing an issue, post the problem here and many of us can help you diagnose what the issue probably is.

Probably not.
1) I've never heard of it before today.
2) 'Optimizers' and 'cleaners' usually cause more harm than good, especially anything promising an indiscriminate 1-click-solves-all solution.
The only optimization I uses is a time machine utility that runs daily incremental backups instead of hourly.
What/why are you trying to optimize?
