Facetime without phone number in iPhone

Why you cannot use Facetime in an iPhone 6 without contract? just over wifi as you do in the desktop?

Is there any way to go around this and being able to use Facetime in the iPhone with an apple ID that does not have a phone number associated to it?

Hello hellenfromchicago and welcome to Apple Support Communities. It appears you are having some difficulty using FaceTime on an iPhone that is being used as a Wi-Fi-only device.

FaceTime can be used over Wi-Fi but first it has to be activated on the device. This activation requires a cellular connection as it involves a silent SMS message being sent to activate both FaceTime and iMessages on the iPhone.

If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support

Once the activation is done, you can remove the SIM and use the device as Wi-Fi only.

Cheers.

Hi hellenfromchicago.

You will need cellular service at least long enough to activate the service on your device. Once the service is active, you should be able to use FaceTime via Wi-Fi without cellular service. The reason for this is that activation requires that the iPhone sends a silent SMS message to Apple's servers and an SMS message requires cellular service.

Cheers.

What do you mean with "activation requires a cellular connection". What exactly do I need? A SIM card? One of those SIM cards that costs 5 dollars? Or I need a contract with ATT or the like? Please clarify.

My phone has already a SIM card in it, since I changed to a new phone and I assume that the original SIM is still there. What I don't have is a cellular service. And that is the whole point of my question: can FaceTime be used without a cellular service? I mean just as is used in the desktop, you do not need any cellular service to use FaceTime in the desktop.
