iPadOS Files app and SMB Path access

Hi everyone,

I would like to add a SMB server on the Files app of my iPad Pro accessing directly to a subfolder.

The idea is not to browse on all the sub folders of my server to find the good one but just to create an easy access to the folder through this kind of configuration : smb://my-server/access/to/my/root/folder

Unfortunately, when I’m doing it, the root folder of my server is always shown while accessing to my Server...

FYI, I am using iPadOs 14.2.

Do you have any idea to make it work ?

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks a lot for your answer. However my main concern is about the way we can specify a folder into the SMB access URL.

AFAIK, if we specify an access to a specific folder through this URL (for example smb://my_server_ip/path/to/my/folder) the app will only display the root folder instead of my folder.

Is there any way to make the SMB access work this way ?

Greetings, Technizo!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! That's a great question you have about connecting your iPad to an SMB server with the Files app. Check out this article to Use the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Specifically:

"Connect to a file server

  1. Open the Browse tab.
  2. Tap More .
  3. Select Connect to Server.
  4. Enter the SMB address.
  5. Tap Connect.
  6. The server name appears under Shared in the Browse menu. "

We hope this information is helpful and that you have a wonderful day!

I don’t think it’s possible to include a file path with Apple’s Files app. You will need to use a more flexible third party app like FE File Explorer Pro. Very disappointing that Apple didn’t include this capability.

Here’s are the input fields in the FE File Explorer Pro app.

Display Name My Laptop Desktop

Host Name/IP LEE_LAPTOP

Path /users/lee/desktop

Here’s what it looks like in the FE File Explorer Pro app.
