Stop Finder window sliding to left. Show scrollbars

Can someone help please.

I have Finder in List View. I have the sidebar on the left.

There don't seem to be any scroll bars visible, although they do flash up from time to time.

When I click on a directory on the left, eg documents, the list opens on the right.

Sometimes, (and I can't reproduce it to order) the list of documents slides to the left under the sidebar, so I can no longer see the directory name I am working in.

Sometimes, if I fiddle around, a scrollbar appears on the bottom and I can slide the list to the right again and see the left again. (But I can't reproduce it to order, either.)

How do I stop the finder window sliding to the left?

How do I ensure the scrollbars always stay visible?

There don't seem to be options for this under preferences or View Options.

You can drag the Finder window to resize (grab any corner) to fit your needs.

Dear Dialabrain

Thanks for your patience.

It is not the same problem as I was explaining above, but playing around I have discovered how to reproduce another similar problem as these two images show; Before & After, both in list view.

It is very simple - I was unintentionally scrolling right by moving my hand on my mouse! But is there no way to stop this happening in Finder?

Thanks Dialabrain

I'm lost which post you are referring to.

However, if it is about disabling scrollbars, that is fine for Finder, but it creates another problem in other apps.

Thanks for all your help, but I have basically concluded that Apple hasn't provided a way to fix the Finder window the way I want it, to stop it sliding/collapsing into the left.

Cheers

Thank you very much Leroy.

I now have my scroll bars in my Finder. Easy. Thanks.

The finder contents still slide to the left under the sidebar sometimes, though. Don't know how to stop that.

And resizing the Finder window only helps for a while until I restart, then the window reverts back to a little one. I see there are many postings about fixing that, such as deleting the com.apple.finder.plist file, which I have tried, to no avail, but frankly it seems a bit extreme!

I had looked at those links you provided, but they are not very helpful with the basic explanations. And I had not expected to find a "Finder Preference" hiding under "System Preferences", when a "Finder Preference" is a more sensible place to put it. Still I suppose that is decades of Apple development behind that idea.

Anyway, with the scroll bars, at least it is easy to get back to see what I want.

Cheers
