ac power cord is staying lit red, although mac is 100% charged

My MacBook Pro is 100% charged, but the power cord is changes quickly from green when it is initially plugged in, to red. The system is about 4 years old, and I'm wondering if the power cord will need replacing soon. Thanks!

The magsafe cord/connector light is informed by the DC-in board and logic board.
