Backup File Not Showing in Manage Backups

I’ve recently had to replace my phone and need to restore it from a backup saved to my MacBook. However, when I access the phone through Finder, none of my older backups show in Manage Backups, but when I go to the backups folder, they’re all there.

Can someone help me fix this? I didn’t save any of the backups on the cloud unfortunately.

Hey again! Thanks for that info!

Finished backups are usually much larger than that, what was the capacity of the phone, or better, how much storage was being used on the phone at the time of the backup?

I believe it was after Catalina, (Maybe Mojave), that iTunes/Music backups changed, to just overwrite the same backup file saving HD space on your Mac, wonder if that’s related, but yeah, they’re typically much larger than that, so sounds as if incomplete.

Also 20gb free on your Mac isn’t a whole lot when comparing the size of a normal iOS backup, so that may also be a factor.

Also in that “Get Info” window, does the “Date Created” and “Date Modified” match the dates of the backups you’re looking for? Or are the older?

But I’m also wondering if the permissions are set correctly, also in that same Get Info window, on the bottom, does it show your current Mac user name? And does it show “Read and Write” to the right of it? (I’d also check that for then parent folder “Backups”.

You can repair the permissions of your entire user folder also if you need to, but other than accessing these backups, there’s no problems with any other apps?

Another possible step is just reinstalling Catalina itself, in case it’s just an OS issue, only hesitation about that is the size of the backups, if incomplete then that still wouldn’t work, but I’ve been suprized before.

Also, have you by chance started the restore from iTunes backup from the iPhone itself during the initial startup selecting “Restore from iTunes backup”? Or was the phone already set up and you’re just initiating it from Finder?

Sorry, my mind wanders, Hope it works out, nobody wants to lose their personal data, let me know what you find!

Hi Von_Angel!

That’s a tough one, hope I can help out. Just want to make sure I understand it right.

So you go to “Manage Backups” in Finder, but none show up?

However if you navigate to the actual folder:

~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backups, you can see them there?

Sounds like you’re already on Catalina, what iOS version were you running at the time of the backup?

Also, we’re they transferred from another Mac or even PC? Finally, is there a Time Machine backup?

Can you recall the OS version at the time of the backup as well?

Sometimes iCloud backups are stored with a different iCloud account as well, although I know unlikely if you don’t have another one.

Can you recall at the time of that backup, if either “iCloud” or to “This Computer” was selected as the backup destination?

Another question I have is the available iCloud storage as compared to your Mac?

Sometimes, I know due to technical issues this might happen, those answers may help.

Also, another question, if you can see those backups in the backups folder on your Mac, (Of course it wouldn’t show the description and size, etc. as it would in “Manage Backups”), can you highlight each one hit Command i to get the info? The size of the backups would show on the top right of that window, may also give a clue.

Sorry, I know it’s a lot of questions at once Any answers may help though, thanks!

Thanks for responding, DiZoE!

I'll try my best to give as much info as possible.

Yes, you have it right. When I go to "Manage Backups," none of my previous backups show (only the one I backed up to iCloud last night shows). However, when I navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backups, they're all there.

The backups have never been transferred--always stored on "This Computer," the current MacBook. I honestly can't remember when I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina (beginning of this year maybe). Also, there's no Time Machine backup.

As for storage, I have ~30GB of iCloud space available and ~20GB on my MacBook.

The size for the most recent backup file (the one stored on the Mac from Jan. 2020) is 251,084,744 bytes (253.2MB on disk) for 1,416 items.
