How long do I have to trade in an old iPhone when buying a new one as a Christmas gift?

I want to buy someone a new iPhone for Christmas. The recipient will have an older iPhone to trade in to Apple once the new phone is received on Christmas day. How much time will the recipient have to mail back the old phone so that the trade in can be processed? Does Apple give buyers more than 14 days to return the trade in phone during the holiday season? Will the 14 day period during which the old phone must be mailed back to Apple start when I purchase the new phone, or will the 14 day mail in period start when the new iPhone is activated by the recipient?

I am in same situation with 2 phones and found the specialist chat not super helpful in terms of providing additional information. You have 14 days to return the old phone or cancel the trade in. Either way result is the same. You get charged full price for the phone. If you opted for financing the monthly payment is changed accordingly. Then when you do decide to send phone back Apple will give you a gift card for the amount. Solution really is don’t initiate a trade in upgrade more than 14 days before you would be ready to send phone back!
