I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro and under the storage tab it shows that I have a 500GB SATA Disk, however it shows that I'm almost out of my 33.5GB storage. I'm not sure if it's normal to have such minimal storage with a larger hard drive. Does anyone have any tips for expanding my usable storage?

You should have nearly the full 500 GB available. It may be that you're working on a partition of the disk. When you secondary click the hard disk icon on your desktop and Get Info, what does that show? Also, open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and check there.

Sure. Emails, photos, movies, etc. My 2010 MBP has >750 GB (on a 1 TB SSD that I swapped in for the 500 GB HDD it came with).
