Removing items from my reading list

I tried the swipe, no delete button. I tried drag and drop to trash items will not drag. Help

iMac, OS X 10.11

Why does an item I've saved to my reading list disappear from the list as soon as I open it? I don't understand why my reading list vanishes as soon as I open an item. What if I didn't have a chance to finish it or want to re-read an article?? Any insights anyone can provide would be most appreciated.
