adobe illustrator

El Cap might not work with the version of Illustrator, i would upgrade to Mojave or High Sierra

but first perform a time machine back up

My MacBook air 2010 loves Mojave and everything is responsive, but Illustrator is slower than older OSX

therefore i just take my time when using that program and export everything as PDF to print, save and share designs now.

Compatibility may be the Culprit:

Adobe is quite expensive software. If it will not operate, then you could save quite a bit of money, by using a Virtual Machine(VM) for running a Windows version of this. Windows-in-a-window. 

You would open items in the Virtual Machine, and use Windows compatible software on it. So, ask Adobe for a Windows version install file of this. All would be accessed and would operate as desired on the VM. Virtual Machine applications include VMWare Fusion and Parallels. Learn more here: What Is a Virtual Machine? - VMWare Support.
