Recently upgraded to watch OS 7.2 on a series 5.
watch is about 4 months old.
before the update I could get about 1.5 days on a single full charge. Now I can get maybe about half of that.
no settings or apps have been changed or added. The only change is the OS
how do I fix this?

Updating to 7.2 did not fix my watch battery drain problem, but doing what Randy-12 suggested worked. You need to force restart your phone and then restart your watch when the apple logo on your phone appears.
Did the battery improve after 7.2?

Ohhh I will try it! Is it necessary that the watch has 100% battery charged?
I don't think it needs to be 100% charged. I'm pretty sure my wasn't when I did the restarts
After any IOS or OS update I find that a few force restarts both your iPhone and your watch are needed.
First force restart your iPhone by whatever method your version calls for. As soon as you see the Apple logo force restart your watch by holding in the crown and side button for 10 seconds till you see the Apple logo then release. Log into your iPhone and wait for your watch to boot, then log into it.
