iPad keyboard not showing on iPad 7th gen WiFi devices

The keyboard often disappears on the iPads right in the middle of working or does not show up right away. This happens in many of the apps we use in the classroom. SpellingCity, Renaissance, GoodNotes. It will come back if the kids swipe out of what they are working on but then they lose what they did, in a spelling test for example.
