HP OfficeJet images printing with black background

OfficeJet Pro 6978

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

I use this printer for work. Our company logo prints out on many pages that I am having to print and starting last week the background of the logo is printing black instead of white. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers, I have power cycled the printer and computer several times. I found a similar problem to mine on HP's website that suggested changing the background color of the pdf to white, this also didn't help.

I suspect this is something with my computer rather than the printer because when I print from a different computer the background of the image is normal. Also printing to different printers from this computer still has the black background. Does anyone know what setting on my computer could be causing something like this?

This problem also occurs with the latest macOS Big Sur as well as Catalina.

The issue is present on my HP and CANON inkjets. My HP color Laserjet Pro does not have the problem, but low-end colour lasers are not as good as inkjets for colour rendition.

The black background issue happens when a PDF with embedded bit map images (e.g. PNGs) opens in the macOS Preview app PLUS some other third party PDF apps (e.g. PDFpenPro 12).

The problem does not occur when printing from Acrobat or the free Acrobat Reader.

I wonder if some third party PDF apps somehow integrate with macOS Preview where the core problem perhaps exists?

Exporting to a flattened PDF does not help.

A hack that works as suggested by PDFPen Pro Support but this is not very convenient.

  1. Export the offending PDF to TIFF
  2. Make a new PDF by importing the TIFF
  3. Save as PDF.

The above may fix the problem for your color letterhead until the underlying issue is solved.
