Reboot and try again launching the installer from a safeboot.
Applications/ "Install macOS Big Sur.app"

Thank you for your reply. I don’t think I have the download, in spite of the error message. I couldn’t find “Install macOS Big Sur.app” in my computer. How can I delete whatever is in my computer and re-download the upgrade? ( I am upgrading from MacOS 10.15.7)
In all honesty I would wait a day or two and try again.
Not guarantee and might well be for naught, you can delete this plist from your Finder >Go>Go To Folder, copy and paste:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.plist
after you delete this plist, reboot.
Thank you again. I will wait 2 or 3 days and if I can not solve the problem I will talke the mac to an Apple Store and ask for their help. I deleted that file you told me, rebooted, but still got the same error when clicking on “upgrade now”.
I tried just a few hours later and the upgrade downloaded again and installed without problems.
