To import: launch Numbers and File > Open and navigate to the Excel document you want to import.

Most, but not all, Excel formulas come over to Numbers intact and functioning. Bear in mind, though, that Numbers does not support so-called "array" formulas, the ones you enter in Excel with control-shift-enter so they are surrounded by curly brackets. Numbers also handles date math differently from Excel.

There are usually workarounds for all this in Numbers, but if you intend to make a "round-trip" from Excel to Numbers and back to Excel you will be disappointed.

Net, net. Numbers is pretty good at importing Excel documents so you can access your data in Numbers with most calculations intact. But it is no substitute for Excel if you are collaborating with others who use Excel.

Probably the best approach is to just try it with specific Excel documents and see if the results are good enough for your workflow.

Yes, but…

MS Excel's feature set and Numbers feature set are not the same.

Any feature of Excel not supported in Numbers will not be translated when the Excel document is opened and translated to a Numbers document.

The same is true in the other direction. Exporting a Numbers document to an Excel file will result is the loss of any Numbers feature not supported in MS Excel.

Importing an MS Excel file into Numbers does NOT make any change to the original Excel file.

Exporting a Numbers file in an Excel format does NOT make any change to the Numbers document remaining in Numbers or to the original Numbers file saved as a Numbers file.

Barry
