Downgrade HP printer firmware?

The latest HP firmware update bricked my printer (I'm using 3rd party toner). There is lots of noise on Reddit about the problem and various Windows solutions. I'm looking for one that works for a Mac. I have the previous (working) HP .rfu but can't figure out how to push it to the printer. FTP doesn't work, and current HP Print Utility doesn't recognize it.

Thoughts?

Ron

It's really a signed certificate issue. Read this Apple document for why and a fix: If your HP printer doesn't work and you see a warning that HP software '...will damage your computer' - Apple Support.

Solved it. @leroydouglas -- all good suggestions but HP intentionally blocked use of 3rd party toner, thus bricking machines that had been working the day before. Not cool for people who rely on them (like me) for day-to-day business use.

Smarter people than me figured it out. In short, you need the .rfu file for your HP printer.

(find the FTP download path for your printer here: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/pfirmware/pfirmware.glf)

Download the .rfu. And then follow the instructions at:

https://kevin.deldycke.com/2020/11/revert-hp-printer-ban-on-third-party-ink-cartridges/

For quasi-but-not-fully technical people such as myself, getting this to work involves following his instructions but substituting your own computer name and the actual path to your copy of the .rfu.

Or, from one of his responders (this was the method I was trying originally but couldn't get to work...)

Good luck!

When I did the update I started getting malware issues with /library/printers/hp/frameworks/hpdevicemonitoring.framework. Regardless of how many times I did or didn't send a note to apple via that requestor box, it just kept flashing at me in an endless loop. I just renamed the file to hpdevicemonitoring.1framwork. The endless loop ended and the printer is working fine for printing.

I thought the Big Sur update might work to correct this weird issue but it has an installation problem.

Did Apple's stock drop today or something?
