If the UK SIM will not work, do you see a message on the screen? Like kb1951says, it sounds like the iPhone is locked to your US carrier. You need to ask your US carrier if they will unlock the phone. You will need to follow their instructions for an unlock. They may have restrictions as to when they can unlock the phone. If the iPhone is unlocked, you should be able to use it temporarily. Check with a UK carrier to see if they support the model that you have. Remember that warranty on the device is not valid in the UK. If you are thinking of purchasing an iPhone in the US to use in the UK, not a good idea.
