Disk icon not showing on desktop
When I insert a disk in my external Blu-ray drive the name of the disk shows on the desktop but not the disk icon. Has anyone else had this problem. I never had this problem until I upgraded to macOS Big Sur.

Hello WebSurfer*,
Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with the DVD icon showing on your computer.
Please check your setting for the options available: Insert CDs and DVDs into Mac - Apple Support
The article also points these details out:
"You can choose what your Mac does when you insert certain types of CD and DVD discs. For example, you can open photo editing software whenever you insert a picture CD or run an AppleScript script that backs up your important documents whenever you insert a blank DVD."
"Some apps can start processing an inserted disc immediately. See the user guide that comes with the app you want to use with the CD or DVD."
Thanks and have a wonderful day.

I concur with the above observation relating to the absence of an optical disc icon when an optical disc is being mounted on the desktop. There is no optical disc icon on the desktop for Blu-ray discs with MacOS 11, in fact. no icon of any description appears on the desktop when you are dealing with such media on a Mac running OS 11. This is basically what you get on the desktop:
and here's what is shown in the Desktop get info panel:
I'd assume this to not be intentional, but if it is then it is absurd and needs rectifying.
That decides what will happen when you insert a dvd or cd but doesn't address the problem with the disk icon not displaying on the desktop. Thanks for the tip but that's something that I have known about for years. I believe that there is a bug in their system that need to be worked out. I have notified Apple directly and will wait and see if they fix the problem. I have 3 mac's and have reverted back to Catalina on 2 out of 3 because of this and the fact that I really hate what they have done to the interface. Bright mode is so bright that it hurts your eyes to look at it. Dark mode only has a dark menu bar if you have a dark desktop picture. Printer drivers are still not there for many users. Some of my apps no longer work correctly with this system. A new system isn't any kind of improvement if it breaks everything else you own.
I have found that CD icons show up on the desktop and DVD icons show up on the desktop but Blu-ray disk icons don't. Seems strange to me that Apple has chosen to leave out Blu-ray disk icons when they where always there in previous systems. I hope that they fix it because it really looks stupid the way it is now, with the disk title showing but no icon.
The recent MacOS 11.1 update fails to address this issue and the problem persists. Are Apple seriously not able to address or rectify this? It isn't as though they didn't know of the existence of this problem prior to the latest OS update because both the OP and myself have reported it to them as being a bug/issue with the OS.
I have the EXACT same issue. Regular DVD's show up fine, Blu-Rays only the Title shows up! Definitely a Bug. Right-clicking once on the name shows the border of where the ICON would normally be but this is annoying! It does show up correctly in the Side bar of the Finder.
Same issue. I am glad it is not only me. The disc title appears on the desktop but no icon. If you click the title, an area where the icon should be is highlighted.
There are a few quirks in Big Sur which I thought would have been fixed by now (the most recent folder name in Safari's favourites bar temporarily disappearing is another).
The operating system has been recently updated to version 11.2 and still this issue persists.
Of all the issues with this incarnation of MacOS, why is this one so difficult to resolve? Is anyone at Apple actually aware of it or is the omission of a Blu-ray icon purposeful?
I've been using Macs for DECADEs. Today I updated to BigSur. I hope it wasn't a Big Mistake. One of my external drives lost its icon. The contents are still there, but I must say that this a first. It is also bizarre. I hope there will be a fix soon. Looks like it has been going on for about 6 months. Please, Apple, fix this.
Same here with 11.2.2. BD icons don't appear on desktop. Please report via Feedback Assistant as I have done:
Same problem as me
Same issue here. I have an external LG FW800 BluRay drive. Discs had an icon through macOS 10.15, no issue at all. No icon now that I have updated to 11.
Yes, I couldn't agree more. This needs to be addressed.
Yes the issue persists. I am also surprised and disappointed.
It must be such a simple fix but it hasn't happened yet. It is more annoying than anything.
