I can't seem to get an aggregate device to work! No matter what I do, the device will only register the first audio device I select in the list and play through that device. Has anyone else been able to resolve this?

I did indeed follow the steps in the article you linked, but unfortunately it still will not work. I am even trying to do it with the most basic aggregate output (Headphones + Speakers) and playing the most basic sound (audio from the built-in Music app on my laptop) and the sound will only play from the first Audio Device selected. I switch between checking Headphones and Speakers first and the audio will only play from the first selected.
If you could assist further, that would be great!
The models are Panasonic Ergofit In-Ear Earbud Headphones and LyxPro HAS-15 Studio Headphones.
Ultimately I want to be able to have both a separate output and my speakers work simultaneously, but I have the same issue with those two so I figured I would have better luck troubleshooting if I figured out why the most basic setup wasn't working either.

I've tried it with both my cheap Panasonic earbuds and my nicer LyxPro Headphones and I get the same result with either.

BTW what are you trying to achieve?
Most of time, built-in and plugged headphones are the same device.
Bluetooth and headsets are another story...

Not impossible but tricky. It also depends on hardware and OS versions.
