Bootcamp not booting in Big Sur using Macbook Pro Late 2014

Just installed Big Sur on late 2014 MacBook Pro 15 yesterday. I've used Bootcamp for my windows partition for years and never had an issue until this OS update and I'm trying to resolve. Bootcamp is supported on Intel Macs using Big Sur OS, but I cannot boot from the drive with this update - either via System Preferences selection or manual startup using the Option key during boot. The Mac chimes 2-3 times, but never boots into Windows, instead going back to the Mac partition. Hopefully this is a software quirk that will get quickly resolved.

Hello everyone!

I just went some trouble with my bootcamp. Let me explain what happened (to see if you have the same problem) and what I did to fix it!

I installed my windows iso on my desktop, then using bootcamp I made the my USB into the windows installer (all is well). I did went and partitioned my drive to the size I wanted (all is well), but when the computer restarted, it went straight to mac. Just like nothing had happened. I then restarted the computer and held the "alt/option" button during restart, I saw the windows partition, selected it, and then it went to mac and my computer froze so I had to force shut it down.

Solution to my problem...

When I booted up my mac, I helped the command, option/alt, P, R keys all together, which is called a reset to PRAM. Hold these buttons for 20 seconds, and you will see your mac restart a few times. After I let go of these keys, I then proceed to hold the option/alt keys, and now there's a 3rd disk that appears that I can use to named EFI boot. Select on it, and you'll finally see steps to download windows!

From there, everything went smoothly!

Best of luck to all :)

This worked for me but it’s still glitchy to load windows .

  1. open terminal
  2. Type “diskutil list”

find your windows disk name (for example it may read disk0s2)

3. type in terminal “sudo diskutil mount disk0s2” “sudo diskutil unmount disk0s2”

4.Restart your computer and hold down option.

5.after you put click into boot camp continue to hold down options

6.If it restarts into Mac OS just restart and boot windows and continue to hold down options until windows boots up

Note: windows might try to load up a repair mode but it should let you also load up windows . This will be a slow load up time but after 2 restarts it worked for me. Good luck . Apple will have to provide an update for this bug .

I first tried going into System Preferences - Privacy - Full Disk Accces and granted full disk access to both System Prefrences and Terminal, as others had suggested. I then tried booting into Windows by using the Option key without success. Next, I followed Nero_7's suggested steps of selecting Startup Disk in System Preferences and choosing the Windows partition/drive. I then restarted my 2014 MacBook Pro 15" computer (without using the Option key) and it successfully booted directly into Windows 10 OS on my first try without any issues. I also tried restarting from Windows 10 and it again directly booted back into Windows 10, so Nero_7's solution above worked perfectly for me.

Thanks to everyone for their very useful posts and technical suggestions - hope this solution works for others as well! Cheers!

I am able to boot to windows at startup with the regular procedure as mentioned here before, with the option button pressed at startup which shows selection option windows or mac after 5 - 10 seconds. But the selected settings in Mac to have startup disk booting automatically in Windows does not work. Even found that leave setting for Apple as startupdisk even speeds up the startproces.

Hope that Apple comes with an update and debug!?

Same with me. I've been using windows 10 pro bootcamp via an external SSD for more than two years. Never had any problem. However, I, unfortunately, upgraded to Big Sur and now windows doesn't boot. While holding the option key, it does show both operating systems but when I select window, it processes for a while, screen goes dark for a moment and then display 'no bootable device detected, insert disk and press any key to continue'. More ironic is the fact that I have downgraded to Catalina again but now it doesn't work with Catalina either. Horrific! Have tried all sorts of tricks and tips but nothing seems to work.

I’m back to Catalina and as previously mentioned it will not install Bootcamp after a foray over to BigSur and back again. Strange times. I mentioned that I had tried Parallels which also refused to work. Well I tried it again and this time I was offered an alternative disk to store the Virtual Machine viz Win 10. Not seen this before. Elected to put it on an external disk (in reality the amazing Transcend Jet Drive 128gb SD plugged into the Mac SD slot). It worked with caveats. All a bit slow. Installed Bluestacks which took forever. When I want to close down the VM Mac by quitting the app, MBP won’t play. Pop ups saying I can’t do this because it’s being used. Hard reset sorts it out but it’s not really a great solution. #Parallels

Probably they have listened to the complaints of update bricking some Mac models, specially the 2013 & 2014 ones.

I can still download macOS Big Sur on a 2012 MBP running Sierra. This was a few minutes ago.

I am surprised that the update is missing from your Software Update. Can you check if you can access the App Store and see Big Sur?

I am actually happy to see this. If they have stopped problematic models from updating, its actually good. Instead of bricking one's mac, its better to wait for more stable release. Yes, I can access app store and by searching, it shows it right there but it doesn't show in system preferences --> software update.

This may be an issue related to Software Update, less so to the availability of the software. If Catalina provides a more stable path, I suggest staying with it, instead of jumping on the Big Sur band-wagon. There are many issues with BS on Intel Macs.

Same issue though. Big Sur caused the OS to disappear. I suppose the solution could be slightly different since I have a T2.

regardless, I’ll start a new thread but do you have any thoughts? This seems to be happening to more people than just the 2014 people. The solutions for those with and without T2 chips may be different even though they’re both having the same issues. Is that worth a second thread?
