You said the important words: "main device". I haven't updated yet because I only have one computer and I'm working from home right now so, I really need it to continue to function reliably.


And, it's not as if Apple is going to run out of Big Sur if I don't update this week. ;-)

In my humble opinion, there is no answer to a general question such as this.


Yes, it may be ok; but:


it also depends on what kind of apps you are running, what you have installed on your Mac, what model/year your Mac is (older or close to vintage Macs will not run new OS versions as well as a newer processor would).


So, there are many variables and it is best to be cautious, do some research and make sure your current system is in perfect shape. In case there are some issues, upgrades to a brand new system/process tend to exacerbate them - they will not fix them.
