I have master files stored in a hard drive that I would like to make proxies of to save locally in my computer to edit on the go, and when I need to export I can simply plug the hard drive in and choose original media. How can I do this?

Media is on an external drive? Change the library storage location to In library. Create the proxy files. Unmount the drive, work in proxy mode.

This is for 10.4.9 which should be the same for 10.4.10. Not sure if anything's changed for proxies in the just released FCPX 10.5.
It's a two step process usually depending on where your media is stored and what you're trying to achieve. Do you want your files external and the proxies internal, or do you want the them both external in two different locations?
What OS? What FCP version?
I really thought there’s be a simple way to do this... simply work off of proxies locally and reconnect to original with a hard drive later. I feel like I’ve done it in the past but for some reason it’s completely escaped my mind on how to do this now!
I would like the proxies to be internal on my Mac, and the original media to be stored in a hard drive. I'm on Catalina 10.15.7 with FCPX 10.4.10 however I'll be updated to Big Sur this evening.
Only one little thing that doesn't affect this. You can copy a library and generate proxies for it. Never saw that on a feature request.
