iPhone 12 Pro Max overheating issue

So I just got the new iPhone 12 Pro Max and it's an awesome phone. Today is my second day of using it and i've noticed that it is starting to get a bit hot just while scrolling through Facebook. I have seen a couple of posts about the iPhone 12/12 Pro heating up so I guess we can add the Pro Max to the list too.

I have checked the background app refresh and don't have any tabs open. I charge my phone on a Belkin 10W Wireless Charging Stand as well.

Any thoughts?

If you feel that to be the case, contact Apple Support directly:

Facebook is one of the more processor and video intensive sites on the Internet, so it will always use a lot of battery and do a lot of processing which causes the phone to warm as the CPU does more work.

"Too hot to touch" is a personal issue as what some people think is burning hot isn't even warm to others; however long before it becomes hot enough to injure you (or damage itself) your phone would shut itself down.

i’ve been having the same issue since day one. It’s been now almost what two weeks since the phone came out and I have an iPhone 12 pro max as well. It gets hot even through the case almost too hot to touch on my arm. I would suggest wiping it and reinstall the software if you haven’t also make sure you are not for us closing apps (wiping up to close them) this crashes the apps and causes the phone to run harder to reopen them. If not I’m going to have to take it in to be checked or call. Hope this helps!

I was able to acquire a replacement phone and I have the exact same issue with the replacement iPhone 12 Pro Max. It overheats during app use and auto dims the screen as a protective measure to reduce heat. It can be a software issue and hopefully app developers or Apple make software changes for app optimization to reduce the amount of cpu power. So far it’s a thumbs down with the iPhone 12

I purchased my wife an iphone 12 pro max just about 2 months ago for almost $1500 and so far I am very dissapointed with the overheating issue. We have had multiple calls with Apple and Verizon on this issue, they even sent us a refurb iphone 12 max to duplicate the issue and it followed the 2nd phone as well. Its so obvious that Apple knows they have a "MAJOR" problem on their hands with this phone. My wife and I have been troubleshooting with both Apple and Verizon now for 2 months and whenever she gets on the TikTok app and does live videos for 30 minutes for example the phone gives a "temperature warning" and shuts off! This has happened at least 15 times in the 60 days we have owned it. Totally totally unacceptable from a company like Apple!! On the 2nd phone they sent me they wanted me to restore the phone to factory settings with nothing on the phone and try to run the Tiktok video again for the 30 minutes. Sounds like they are fishing for straws, fix the issue with your phones or recall them!! I also had your IPhone10XS max 4Glte and it works fine with the TikTok app and no temperature power off issues. If you cant fix the issue with this phone then give me my money back and also the people that spent tons of $$$$ on them as well.. Also, as of me writing this, the iphone 12 max pro is on 14.4.1 which is the latest software and all apps updated on the phone.

So it’s been about 2 months that I’ve had the iPhone 12 Pro Max now and the overheating issues have stopped. Yes it gets a little warm sometimes when I’m using it for heavy tasks. But nothing like when I first got it and would overheat as I was scrolling through Facebook. I hope that it’s done the same for you all and I’m sorry to hear it if you had to return your phone because of the overheating issues.

I have recently purchased an iPhone 12 pro max it started overheating from the time i started using it I’m using apple compatible wireless car charger as I am an Uber driver and use it for navigation as well I am concerned because lately it overheated to the extent I had to wait for it to cool down to be able to use it again has this caused any damage to the phone?

I just came here to thank you for actually posting a follow-up to your case.

Most people, practically 99.9%, post their problems, but forget about the most important part that’s how they solved it.

I’m having overheating issues with my new iPhone 11 Pro Max and I’m patiently waiting to see if it’ll subside.

I was starting to wonder if waiting made any sense, after all, what a new phone, started from scratch, would possibly have to index. After reading about your case I can see I was wrong.

This is the exact reason why follow-ups are important.

Thanks again!

hey thank you so much for your kind words. I see it happen all the time so the least I can do is make sure you know that for some people the issue is solved. I don’t know much about indexing either. I’m sure that it will subside but it’s just going to take time.

Good luck with it though and I hope it fixes itself like mine did.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone experienced overheating while playing games; particularly Genshin Impact. I noticed that if I set the refresh rate to 60fps (even if I turn down all other settings) the phone gets extremely hot and some functions get disable because the phone needs to cool down. Using regular settings at 30fps gets the phone very warm but nothing gets disabled.

PS: this also happened while playing "A Monster Expedition" from the Arcade library.

So when using a third party app to do live video streaming, one of the most processor and network intense things a phone can possibly, do, when the phone heats up it's Apple's problem.

Try complaining to TikTok instead, as people have been able to use Facetime (and for that matter, Zoom) for more than 30 minutes without issue.
