Swapping SIM cards from a 3G phone?

Hello all,

I'm in a bind with my current IPhone 3G and need your opinion. My 3G is on it's last legs, the "Genius" at the Apple store confirmed it...It's having hardware issues and needs to be replaced.

My issue is that I'm not elligible for an IPhone 4 upgrade till September, but I need to get a new phone since I use it primarily for work. I was thinking about doing this, please let me know if it will work:

Instead of waiting till September to upgrade my phone, I'll add a new line to my existing family plan which will let me get the new 4g for the $199 price. My question is this...can I take the SIM card from my existing 3G phone and plug it into my new 4G phone and retain the same phone number? Or am I stuck with having to use a new phone number on the new phone?

Any help is appreciated.

You would have to get a new sim with the old number for the new phone as it is a micro sim.

The iphone 4 has a micro sim. The sim cards are not interchangeable.

Why not call AT&T ( or whomever your provider is) and tell them what you want to do?

Certainly they can help.

Unless you pat the early termination fee on your old line you will have to continue to pay your data plan on both lines.

Is that September 2010? AT&T was allowing anyone who's contract was coming due before the end of the year to upgrade early. Call them and check. Check the forums too, there is a number you type into your phone and you get a text back saying when you are eligible.

I've been on the phone multiple times with AT&T, they wont budge and upgrade my IPhone early. I'm even contemplating just starting a Verizon account and getting a Droid...Hopefully IPhone will come to Verizon sometime soon.

dude all you have to do is cut your current SIM card down to micro-sim size. i've done it!!! it works!!!

Call them and tell them that you want to get an iphone for a new line, then you want to switch phones between the phone numbers. They should be able to help, although (as provided ) you will have to pay for two data plans.
