Safari 14.0.1: No video (audio only) when streaming (Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, etc)

Installed Big Sur on Thursday and have noticed an issue with Safari. When streaming content from Netflix, HBO Max or Amazon Prime the stream will start normally and after about 20-30 seconds the video goes "black" but I still hear audio. It's as though the stream is still going, just no longer playing video.

Safari Version 14.0.1 (16610.2.11.51.8)

macOS Big Sur Version 11.0.1 (20B29)

Curiously, YouTube has no issues playing content.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Although Apple has yet to get back to me with any solution or promised software update I do think I have at least narrowed down what the issue may be.

I noticed the other day in YouTube, whilst playing a movie (YouTube Movies) the same phenomenon happened. Roughly 30 seconds into the presentation, the video portion went away and I could still hear audio. This is the same thing I experience on Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video and Spectrum. All of that taken together makes me think there is some DRM codec that just does not want to play nice with the new Safari; at least not for me on my 4K iMac.

Again, I'll mention that normal YouTube plays fine for me with no issues as do sites like Vimeo, etc. Even news sites that still use flash or m3u8 have no issues.

I do sincerely prefer using Safari and staying within the Apple ecosystem when I can because of ease of use and simplicity. But this predicament forces me to have to use a 3rd party browser which stinks.

Apple needs to fix this.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Yes, my Mac has been restarted. As a matter of fact I have done the following things...

  • Restarted (many times)
  • Reset NVRAM (several times)
  • Completed clean install twice (erasing HD both times)
  • Opened ticket with Apple Support

At the current time, my ticket is with a Senior Advisor at Apple. They've had me enable and re-enable the VP9 decoder in Safari (Develop Menu / Experimental Features). Also kill the coraudiod process in Activity Monitor. All to no avail.

I'm awaiting a response soon hopefully on next steps.

Kind regards,

Jason

Hi Iamjasonmanley,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! From our understanding, when playing videos in Safari from other sites besides YouTube, it goes black after 30 second or so, do we have that? Since noticing this issue, has your Mac been restarted?

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Have you tried clearing out the history in Safari, closing it out completely and relaunching it?

Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac

You can also check the steps in this article: If Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing.

Also, does this happen in Safe Mode as well? Check out: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

If you're still having trouble, you may want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. You may be able to reach them here: Get Support.

Hope that helps!
